Dick & Pip Smith – RTW

 The Smith’s Overland Adventure

Australian adventurers Dick and Pip Smith have flown around the world by both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft and have visited the North Pole together. Dick has also visited the South Pole and he is the first person to fly a helicopter solo around the world. Pip is the first woman to fly around the world in a helicopter. So what did the Smith’s decide to do for an encore? They decided to drive around the world in an EarthRoamer XV-LT!

The Smith’s departed Broomfield Colorado on March 25th, 2006 and returned to Colorado with their EarthRoamer almost three years later on October 12th, 2008. They first headed for  Seattle to ship the truck to Anchorage, Alaska, the official start of their trip.  May of 2006 they departed Anchorage and headed in a number of stages to New York.  They then shipped their vehicle by sea to England and drove from England to Vladivostok over a period of about 18 months.

From Vladivostok they shipped their EarthRoamer Xpedition Vehicle to Japan and then on to Perth to drive Steep Point (the western most point in Australia) and across the Australian deserts to Byron Bay (the eastern most point).  The Smiths then drove down to their home in Sydney and a magnificent welcome celebration at the Sydney Opera House.

Finally, they shipped their EarthRoamer from Sydney to Long Beach, California and completed the drive back to Colorado and the birthplace of their EarthRoamer.

Over a period of almost three years, off and on they drove their EarthRoamer across the USA, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Japan and Australia.  The total trip from Denver to Denver, including the ferry drive to Seattle and the Los Angeles to Denver segment was: 45,552 kilometers or

It has been a fantastic journey with wonderful memories and Pip has taken many photographs to help keep those memories alive.  We really enjoyed each other’s company and became a good team sharing the tasks of driving a vehicle around the world.

On Tuesday 14, October, we drove ourselves to the local Broomfield airport, where we handed our EarthRoamer over to Bill with the hope that he will sell it for us. When it came to leaving the vehicle for the very last time, Pip found herself shedding a few tears.  This vehicle had become our secure adventure machine and had enabled us to see amazing places and meet wonderful people.
